How to Measure Inseam on Trousers
The inseam is the length of the inner leg seam, from the crotch point to the bottom of the hem. It is one of the most important numbers for trouser length.
Measure a garment
- Lay the trousers flat on a table and smooth out wrinkles.
- Find the crotch point, where the leg seams meet.
- Run the tape along the inner leg seam to the hem edge.
- Read the measurement without pulling the fabric.
Measure your own inseam
Wearing light clothing and standing straight, measure from the crotch to the point on the ankle or floor where you want the trousers to end. A second person makes this easier.
Compare with a well-fitting pair
Often the simplest method is to measure a pair you already like and use it as a reference.

Things that change the result
- Hem allowance and hem style.
- Shrinkage after washing.
- Whether you wear the pair high or low on the waist.
- Shoes you plan to wear with them.
State the method
If you sell clothing, say how you measure so customers can compare in the same way.
