How to Inspect Incoming Apparel Cartons
Inspecting cartons when they arrive helps you catch shipping damage and count errors while the carrier or supplier can still respond. A short, consistent routine is enough for most small businesses.
Check the outside first
Look for crushed corners, wet marks, torn tape or signs of reopening. Photograph any damage before moving the carton, and note it on the delivery paperwork.
Match the paperwork
- Number of cartons against the packing list.
- Carton labels against the purchase order.
- Styles, colours and sizes marked on each carton.
Count the contents
Open every carton for a unit count, or open a sample if volumes are large. Compare the count with the packing list and record the difference.

Sample the garments
Pull a few units from different cartons. Check size labels, stitching, stains, odours, loose threads and measurements on one or two pieces.
Record and report
Keep a simple log with date, order number, findings and photos. Report problems to the supplier promptly with this evidence attached.
Separate before shelving
Keep questionable goods apart from approved stock until the issue is resolved, so faulty units do not reach customers.
