How to Choose Between Two Sizes in Clothing

Sitting between two sizes is common. A few checks usually point to the better choice.

Use garment measurements

Do not rely on the size letter alone. Compare the flat measurements of each size with a similar garment you already own and like.

Consider the fabric

Stretch fabrics are more forgiving, so the smaller size may work. Rigid fabrics, such as non-stretch denim or woven cotton, give less room, so the larger size may be safer.

Think about the intended fit

  • Slim cuts leave little room for layering.
  • Relaxed styles may look best in your usual size.
  • Oversized styles may sit well in a size down.

Look at the weakest point

Decide which measurement matters most, such as chest, waist or thigh. Choose the size that suits that point and accept slight looseness elsewhere.

Check care and shrinkage

Cotton may shrink a little in the first washes. If the care label suggests a warm wash or tumble drying, allow for it.

Read the return policy

When unsure, buy from a seller with a clear exchange process, and keep tags on until you are happy with the fit.
