How to Check Fabric Colourfastness at Home
Colourfastness describes how well a fabric keeps its colour during washing, rubbing, light and sweat. Simple home checks can reveal obvious problems early.
Wash test
Sew or pin a small swatch to a piece of white fabric and wash both using the intended care method. Check whether the white fabric picked up colour and whether the swatch has faded.
Rub test
Rub the fabric with a clean, white cloth, first dry and then slightly damp. Colour on the cloth suggests poor rubbing fastness, which matters on dark denim and deep shades.
Other things to check
- Fading after light exposure near a window over time.
- Colour change after contact with sweat, if the garment is sportswear.
- Differences between colours in the same style.

Know the limits
Home tests are a quick screen, not a replacement for laboratory testing. For large orders, request lab reports or have samples tested.
Record the results
Keep notes and photos for each colour. They help when you discuss issues with the supplier.
