How to Check Denim Shrinkage Before Production
Denim can shrink in length and width after washing, and the amount depends on fabric, finishing and how the garment was pre-treated. Testing before production helps you avoid sizing surprises.
Why shrinkage matters
If a pair shrinks more than expected, the stated size no longer matches the fit. This often leads to returns and complaints about length and waist.
A simple test method
- Measure the sample flat before washing: waist, hip, thigh, inseam and rise.
- Wash it using the care instructions you plan to print.
- Dry it as instructed and let it rest flat.
- Measure again at the same points.
- Calculate the percentage change at each point.
Test fabric and garment
Fabric swatch testing is useful early on. A full garment test shows how seams, pockets and finishing affect the final result.

Agree a tolerance
Ask the supplier what shrinkage range is normal for the fabric and agree a limit. Stretch denim and rigid denim often behave differently.
Build it into the pattern
Many factories add shrinkage allowance to the pattern. Confirm whether this has been done so the finished size matches your size chart after washing.
Keep the records
Save test results with the style file. They are useful when you repeat the style or change the fabric.
