How to Approve a Pre-Production Sample Before Bulk Production

A pre-production sample is the last chance to correct a style before the factory cuts bulk fabric. Approving it carefully is one of the most useful quality steps a buyer can take.

Compare against the agreed specification

Lay the sample next to your tech pack or written brief. Check that the fabric, colour, trims, labels and construction match what was agreed, not just what looks acceptable.

Measure the garment

  • Chest or waist width, flat.
  • Body length and sleeve length, or inseam and rise.
  • Neck, cuff and hem openings.
  • Pocket position and size.

Record each measurement and compare it with the tolerance you agreed. If no tolerance was set, ask for one in writing.

Check construction

Look at seam strength, stitch density, thread colour, bar tacks on stress points and how clean the inside finish is. Pull gently on seams and check that nothing opens.

Wash and wear test

Wash at least one sample using the care instructions you plan to print. Check shrinkage, colour change, twisting and any change in hand feel.

Give clear feedback

Write comments point by point and mark what is approved and what must change. If major changes are needed, request another sample instead of assuming bulk will be corrected.

Keep the approved sample

Store a signed or labelled copy as your reference. It becomes the standard for inspecting the bulk delivery.
