What MOQ Means in Clothing Wholesale

MOQ stands for minimum order quantity. In clothing wholesale, it is the smallest quantity a supplier agrees to accept for a particular order or product arrangement. The important question is not only “What is the MOQ?” but “What does that minimum apply to?”

Clarify the unit of the minimum

A supplier may quote a minimum for one style, one colour, a fabric order, a decoration method or the complete purchase. Size mixing may be allowed within that quantity or subject to its own conditions. Ready-stock products and a custom-developed style may have different arrangements.

Ask for the answer in writing with a size and colour breakdown. Do not assume that a minimum listed beside one item applies to every item in a catalogue.

A hypothetical order example

Suppose a supplier states a minimum of 100 pieces per colour for a T-shirt style. Ordering 50 black and 50 white would not meet that condition, even though the total is 100. If the supplier instead allows 100 pieces across approved colours, the same breakdown might work. These numbers illustrate the distinction; they are not an Attirings quotation.

Why customization changes the discussion

A request for a different fabric, special colour, custom labels or decoration may introduce additional preparation or purchasing requirements. Ask whether those details change the minimum and whether any extra charges apply. Separate the garment quantity from minimums for packaging or trims so unused materials do not become a surprise.

Questions to send with your enquiry

  • Is the minimum per style, per colour or per complete order?
  • Can sizes be mixed, and are there required size ratios?
  • Does the minimum change for custom fabric, labels or decoration?
  • Are samples ordered separately from production?
  • What happens if the final quantity changes before approval?
  • Does a reorder follow the same conditions?

Plan around likely demand

A lower unit price at a larger quantity is not automatically a better purchasing decision. Consider how much stock you can use or sell, where it will be stored and how quickly you can reorder. Avoid increasing the order solely to reach a discount without reviewing the size and colour mix.

Prepare a clear starting brief

Include the product type, reference image or sample, desired fabric, quantities by size and colour, branding requirements and delivery destination. Ask the supplier to distinguish confirmed conditions from details that still depend on sample approval.

Read about wholesale apparel and custom manufacturing, then request the current MOQ for your specific product. Minimums should be confirmed for the actual enquiry rather than inferred from a general guide.
