How to Plan a First Wholesale Clothing Order
A first wholesale clothing order works best when it is small, specific and easy to review. The aim is to learn how a supplier communicates, how consistent the garments are and how your customers respond, before you scale up.
Start with a narrow range
Choose a small number of styles rather than a wide mix. Three to five core items, such as a basic t-shirt, a hoodie and a straight-fit jean, let you judge quality without spreading your budget thin.
Decide the details before asking for prices
- Style name and short description.
- Fabric type and weight where known.
- Colours and size range.
- Quantity per style and per size.
- Labelling and packaging needs.
Plan your size ratio
Avoid splitting sizes evenly. Most ranges sell more in the middle sizes, so a ratio weighted towards medium and large is usually more practical. If you have sales history, use it. If not, keep the first order balanced and review it after the first sell-through.

Request samples first
Ask for a sample of each key style, or at least the highest-volume ones. Check stitching, measurements, fabric feel and wash results against what was agreed.
Set a budget that includes the extras
Unit price is only one part of the cost. Include shipping, duties where they apply, labelling, packaging, inspection and a small allowance for returns or damaged units.
Confirm terms in writing
Record minimum order quantity, lead time, payment terms and what happens if bulk goods differ from the approved sample. A short written summary avoids confusion later.
