How to Check Sportswear Seams for Chafing
Seams that feel fine when standing still can rub during exercise. Checking them before bulk production helps prevent comfort complaints.
Look at the seam type
Flatlock and other flat seam finishes sit smoother against the skin than raised overlock seams. The best choice depends on the style and where the seam falls.
Check the high-friction areas
- Underarms and inner arms.
- Inner thighs.
- Waistband and hem edges.
- Shoulders where straps or bags may sit.
Inspect the inside
Run your fingers along the inside seams. Look for hard ridges, thick folds, loose thread ends and rough labels.

Test with movement
Wear the garment and do squats, arm circles, lunges and a short run or brisk walk. Note any rubbing or pulling.
Check after washing
Seams can stiffen or twist after laundering. Wash the sample and check again.
Label placement
Use soft printed labels or tag-free finishing where possible, and confirm they do not irritate the skin.
