How to Check Sports Shorts During a Squat
A controlled squat can reveal whether sports shorts provide the intended coverage and movement room. It should be one part of a wider fit review, performed within the wearer’s normal comfortable range and without added weight. Stop if the movement causes pain or feels unsafe.
Prepare a consistent test
Wear the undergarments and any base layer intended for normal use. Empty the pockets first. Stand in a private, well-lit area with enough room and, if needed, a stable support nearby. Note the waistband position, hem length and fit through the seat and thigh before moving.
Use a simple sequence
- Stand with a comfortable stance.
- Bend the knees and hips only as far as is normal and comfortable.
- Pause briefly to notice pressure, pulling or movement.
- Return to standing without forcing the garment.
- Check whether the waistband, liner and hems settle back.
The purpose is to observe the shorts, not evaluate athletic performance. Do not add a barbell or repeat the movement to fatigue when reviewing a clothing sample.
Watch four areas
- Waistband: does it roll, slide or create uncomfortable pressure?
- Seat: is there enough room, and does the fabric become more revealing than intended?
- Thigh and hem: do the openings grip, ride upward or restrict the movement?
- Pockets: after an empty test, do safe test items remain reasonably secure?
Check opacity appropriately
Use ordinary lighting and the actual colour being considered. View the garment from relevant angles with the wearer’s consent. A hand-stretch test is not the same as checking the finished shorts on the body. If the garment includes a liner, assess both layers together.
Compare sizes without changing the test
If the sample pulls at the thigh but the waistband is loose, simply moving up a size may not solve the pattern balance. Record where the issue occurs and compare with a comfortable reference pair. Keep the stance, underlayer and movement range the same for both samples.
Write specific feedback
Good notes connect the issue to the action: “left hem rides up during the squat and does not settle after standing” is clearer than “shorts uncomfortable”. Add the sample code, size and photographs only with permission.
Use this test with our broader sportswear fit checklist. Explore sports shorts and state the intended activity when requesting a sample.
Retest after any revision
If the waistband, rise, liner or leg opening changes, repeat the complete sequence rather than checking only the altered area. One correction can change coverage or movement elsewhere. Keep the approved sample and dated notes together so production is compared against the same reference.
