Ring-Spun vs Open-End Cotton T-Shirts: Practical Differences
Ring-spun and open-end are two ways of spinning cotton yarn. The method affects how a t-shirt feels, how it wears and how it is priced.
Ring-spun cotton
Ring spinning twists and draws the fibres into a fine, fairly smooth yarn. Fabrics made from it often feel softer and more even, and they usually cost more.
Open-end cotton
Open-end spinning is faster and generally cheaper. The yarn is often a little bulkier and rougher on the surface, which can give a more textured hand feel.
What to compare
- Softness against the skin.
- Surface evenness and visible slubs.
- Pilling after repeated rubbing or washing.
- Price difference at your order volume.

Do not judge by the label alone
Fabric quality also depends on fibre length, yarn count, knitting and finishing. A well-made open-end shirt can outperform a poor ring-spun one.
Match the type to the use
Retail basics with a soft feel may justify ring-spun cotton. Workwear, promotional or budget lines may work well with open-end, as long as the quality is acceptable.
