How to Compare Hoodie Weights: GSM and Feel

Hoodie weight is usually given in GSM, or grams per square metre. It is a helpful starting number, but it does not tell the whole story.

What GSM tells you

A higher GSM means more fabric mass in a given area. Lighter hoodies are often used for spring or layering, while heavier ones suit colder weather or a more structured look.

What GSM does not tell you

  • How warm the interior feels.
  • How the fabric drapes.
  • How well it resists pilling.
  • How much it will shrink.

Interior type matters

French terry and brushed fleece can share a similar GSM yet feel quite different. Brushed interiors usually trap more warmth, while looped terry is often more breathable.

Check consistency

Ask for GSM tolerances. A small variation is normal, but a large gap between the approved sample and bulk can change the feel and the cost.

Feel it in your hands

Compare samples side by side. Check weight, stretch, softness and how the fabric returns after being pinched or pulled.

Match weight to the customer

Consider where and when the hoodie will be worn before deciding on the weight for your range.
