French Terry vs Brushed Fleece: Choosing a Hoodie Interior

French terry and brushed fleece are common choices for sweatshirts and hoodies. In a typical loopback French terry fabric, you can see small loops on the reverse. In a brushed sweatshirt fleece, finishing raises fibres to create a softer, fuzzy inner surface. The difference is useful, but the fabric name alone does not establish warmth or overall quality.

Look at the inside first

Turn the sample inside out and examine a clear area away from seams. Identify whether the reverse has visible loops or a brushed surface. Then check the specification: composition, finished fabric weight and any relevant finishing details. Suppliers sometimes use broad trade names, so a physical swatch helps avoid misunderstanding.

Do not confuse sweatshirt fleece with every other material sold as fleece. A name can cover different constructions and fibre blends. Ask which material the proposed garment will actually use.

Compare comfort in the intended setting

Try each hoodie over the same T-shirt. Check the inside against your forearm, the bulk under a jacket and how the sleeves move. A soft first impression is only one part of the decision. Consider whether the garment will mainly be used indoors, as a light layer, or as part of a colder-weather outfit.

  • Close a zip-up sample and check whether the body feels bulky when seated.
  • Raise your arms and look for pulling at the armholes.
  • Check whether cuffs and the hem feel compatible with the main fabric.
  • Look at the hood when worn and when resting on the back.

Run a care-label wash trial

Record the sample dimensions and photograph both surfaces before laundering. Follow the care instructions, then compare the dry garment with your original notes. Look for changes in dimensions, surface appearance, lint and seam alignment. A single home wash is a practical screening step, not a substitute for a specified laboratory test.

For a wholesale hoodie order

Approve the fabric and the finished hoodie together. A swatch does not show how the hood, rib, pockets and seams work as a complete garment. Keep the approved sample identified by date and version, and confirm whether the production fabric and finishing will match it.

There is no universal winner. Choose the interior that fits the intended use and performs acceptably in your sample checks. For technical examples of these fabric families, see CottonWorks’ digital cotton fabric collection.
