How to Treat Common Stains on Cotton Clothing

Most stains on cotton are easier to remove when treated early. The right first steps matter more than strong products.

Act quickly

Blot excess liquid or lift solids gently with a spoon or blunt edge. Do not rub, as this pushes the stain deeper into the fibres.

Rinse from the back

Hold the fabric under cool running water from the reverse side so the stain is flushed out instead of in. Use cool water first, since heat can set many stains.

Match the method to the stain

  • Food and grease: apply a little liquid detergent and work it in gently before washing.
  • Sweat and body oils: pre-treat with detergent and let it sit before laundering.
  • Mud: let it dry, brush off the loose soil, then wash.
  • Ink and dyes: test any treatment on a hidden area first, as results vary.

Check before drying

Look at the garment after washing. If the stain remains, repeat the treatment. Heat from a dryer or iron can make it permanent.

Test first

Always test products on an inside seam to check for colour loss, and follow the garment care label.
