How to Check Hoodie Cuff and Hem Rib Recovery

Rib knit at the cuffs and hem should stretch to fit and then return to its original size. Poor recovery leaves loose cuffs and a baggy hem that look worn early.

The quick hand test

Stretch the cuff to about double its width, hold for a few seconds, then release. It should spring back without staying wavy or loose.

Measure to be sure

  1. Measure the relaxed cuff width.
  2. Stretch and hold it for a short, consistent time.
  3. Release and wait briefly.
  4. Measure again and compare.

What affects recovery

  • Fibre content, especially a small amount of elastane.
  • Rib structure and tightness.
  • Yarn quality.
  • How the rib is attached to the body fabric.

Check after washing

Repeat the test after one or two washes. Some ribs look fine when new but relax quickly after laundering.

Look at the join

The seam between the rib and the body should be even, with no puckering or stretched stitching.

Record the result

Note the measured recovery on the sample file so you can compare it with bulk production.
