How to Check T-Shirt Shoulder Seams
The shoulder seam affects how a t-shirt hangs and how comfortable it feels. A poorly placed or unstable seam can pull the neckline backward or leave the sleeve sitting awkwardly.
Check the seam position
On a standard fit, the seam should sit on top of the shoulder, roughly in line with the edge of the shoulder bone. On a drop-shoulder style, it sits lower by design, so compare against the intended pattern.
Look for stabilisation
Many better-made t-shirts have tape inside the shoulder seam. It helps the seam keep its shape and reduces stretching over time. Check that it is flat and not twisted.
Inspect the stitching
- Even, straight stitch line.
- No puckering across the seam.
- Neat joins where the neckline meets the shoulder.
- No loose threads or skipped stitches.

Try the garment on or on a form
Check that the shirt sits evenly when worn, without twisting or pulling the collar towards the back. Both shoulders should look level.
Compare both sides
Measure the shoulder seam length on both sides and compare them. A large difference suggests cutting or sewing problems.
Note it for bulk
Add the checks to your inspection list so that the same points are reviewed on each production batch.
