How to Read Clothing Care Labels
Care labels tell you how a garment was tested and how to wash it with the least risk. Reading them takes a minute and can prevent shrinkage, colour loss and damage.
The five main symbols
- Wash tub: washing method and maximum temperature.
- Triangle: whether bleach may be used.
- Square with circle: tumble drying and heat level.
- Iron: ironing and heat setting.
- Circle: professional dry cleaning.
Bars and crosses
A bar under a symbol usually means a gentler cycle. A cross over a symbol means do not use that process.
Dots show heat levels
More dots mean a higher temperature. One dot is low heat and three dots are high. Use the lowest setting if you are unsure.

Follow the label for new items
Garments often shrink or fade most in the first few washes, so follow the instructions closely at first, especially for dark or new items.
If the label is missing
Choose a cool wash, avoid bleach and air dry. Wash similar colours together.
For sellers
Make sure printed labels reflect the fabric and the tests done on the garment, and check the label rules for your target market.
