Different cotton fabric types for clothing and sewing

Natural vs Synthetic Fibres: A Practical Comparison

Fibres are the raw material of every fabric. They fall into two broad groups: natural and synthetic. Each has strengths and trade-offs.

Natural fibres

These come from plants or animals. Cotton and linen come from plants, while wool and silk come from animals.

  • Often soft and breathable.
  • Usually absorb moisture well.
  • May wrinkle, shrink or dry slowly depending on the fibre.

Synthetic fibres

These are made from engineered materials. Polyester and nylon are common in clothing.

  • Generally strong and quick-drying.
  • Often resistant to wrinkles and shrinkage.
  • May feel less breathable unless the fabric is engineered for it.

Blends

Many garments combine fibres. A cotton and polyester blend may keep some softness while improving strength and drying time.

Match fibre to use

Everyday casual wear often suits cotton, while sportswear frequently uses polyester or blends for moisture handling and durability.

Check the label

Fibre content on the label gives the best starting point. Always read the care instructions, as the right wash differs by fibre.
